Mossy Hill Wind Farm receives committee approval

Peel Energy’s Mossy Hill Wind Farm has been given the green light by Shetland Islands Council’s planning committee. The 12-turbine site, located between Scalloway and Lerwick, will have a generating capacity of up to 50 megawatts.

This ‘Remote Island Wind’ development, approved on Monday 15th April, is anticipated to generate renewable electricity for 25 years before being decommissioned. Mossy Hill Wind Farm will play an important role in Shetland’s future energy supply and the development itself is anticipated to make significant contributions towards the economy of Shetland.

A new sub-sea cable is being proposed separately, to connect all of Shetland’s renewable energy generation to mainland Scotland, some 196 kilometres south of Mossy Hill. In order to fund this interconnector cable, the Government has announced that Remote Island Wind projects will be eligible to take part in a competitive Contract for Difference auction which provides financial support for renewable energy projects.

Muir Miller, Managing Director of Peel Energy, part of Peel L&P said: “The recent planning approval for Mossy Hill Wind Farm brings us one step closer to providing a clean, affordable and secure source of electricity as well as long lasting and tangible benefits for Shetland communities and the surrounding environment.”

“We are now considering our Contracts for Difference (CfD) bid, the consultation on the proposed HVDC link and the grid connection. We will continue to liaise with all relevant stakeholders in expectation of bringing this development forward to deliver its range of benefits.”
