Peel L&P team takes action to mark UN World Environment Day
The team from Peel L&P’s net zero carbon workspaces at Venus, in TraffordCity, and the new hub, Evolve, at MediaCity, spent the day at Trafford Ecology Park, with environmental charity, Groundwork Greater Manchester, on a range of projects to manage the woodland, protect local wildlife and preserve the area’s valuable biodiversity.
People from a wide range of functions across the business, including finance, people and culture, and planning, took part in the volunteering day, which was organised by Peel L&P’s sustainability team to promote the importance of World Environment Day and encourage everyone to take action to support the local environment.
The team was involved in tree planting, clearing and composting as well as preparing wildflower beds and building bat and bird boxes.
As a business, Peel L&P has taken great strides towards understanding what it means to be climate resilient. In the last year, Peel L&P has acknowledged a climate and ecological emergency, joined Business Declares and adopted Sustainable Development Goal 13 on Climate Action.
In January, Peel L&P unveiled its Climate Positive Plan, a promise to take more greenhouse gases out of the air than it produces by 2030 and has committed to reporting annually on its progress.
The business, which owns and manages over 12 million sq. ft of property and 20,000 acres of land and water across the UK, has already made significant progress towards this goal. During the last eight years, the business has saved 55m kWh of energy and 16,828 tonnes of CO2. During 2020/21 alone, it saved 8.7m kWh and 2,059 tonnes of C02.
Sixteen of Peel L&P’s operational buildings are already verified as net zero carbon, as defined by the UK Green Building Council, which involves improving their energy efficiency every year and offsetting remaining carbon emissions through a Verified Carbon Standard scheme, as well as supporting local initiatives.
Jo Holden, Sustainability Director at Peel L&P, said: “Our team really enjoyed their day volunteering at Trafford Ecology Park. It was a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of World Environment Day among our teams and educate them about the importance of protecting our green spaces and how we can all do our bit towards creating a more climate resilient future.
“As a business, we are connecting the dots between the net zero carbon agenda and nature-based solutions, which is needed to slow the effects of climate change. Our Climate Positive Plan demonstrates just how deep this commitment goes.
“World Environment Day is really important because it reminds us that we can all play our part, both as businesses but also as individuals, in making a positive change to protect our natural environment, no matter how small it may seem.”
Michael Ormerod, Executive Director at Groundwork Greater Manchester, added: “Trafford Ecology Park is a sanctuary for nature in one of Europe’s largest industrial estates. As one of just a few green spaces in the area, its preservation is critical for the nature recovery.
“Thanks to the support of businesses like Peel L&P, greenspaces like Trafford Ecology Park are maintained so that nature and biodiversity can thrive. We hope that other businesses in the area following Peel L&P’s example and offer their support to this valuable space.”
