Realise your possibility at Peel L&P: Apprentice Rhys tells his story

This week is National Apprenticeship Week (3rd – 7th February 2020) so we’re focusing on apprenticeships within Peel L&P in a series of blogs with our apprentices, a view from Construction Director at our homebuilder, Northstone and some thoughts from People & Talent Advisor, Jess Holbrook.

To kick-start the week, we have been talking to Rhys Braithwaite, Assistant Property Manager at Lifestyle Outlets. Rhys has had an evolving apprenticeship role at Peel L&P having started out as an Administration Assistant at the Lowry Outlet in September 2015, Rhys took on the role of Assistant Property Manager at the site in 2017, studying a Surveying Technician Diploma ran by the University College of Estate Management. Having completed his diploma in July 2019, Rhys is now looking to undertake the Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship in Property and Real Estate, as a higher-level apprentice via the University of Salford later this year. In his own words, Rhys gives insight to his role at Peel L&P:

How did you discover the Peel L&P apprenticeship scheme?

When I first joined the Lowry Outlet as an Administration Assistant, I knew that I wanted to progress within the company. Senior managers were all incredibly supportive and introduced me to other members of the team from across the business. I started to take on a few additional roles from the property department and really enjoyed the work. The head of property was extremely approachable and explained to me the potential development opportunities within the Peel L&P apprenticeship scheme. I was offered the role of Assistant Property Manager with a strong development plan, that paved the way to becoming a Chartered Surveyor. Having a firm plan in place for my development made me feel positive about the future possibilities for my career.

What does your role involve?

As Assistant Property Manager, I work with existing and new tenants of the Lowry Outlet which includes many different elements such as lease management, debt recovery, rent reviews, budget management, representing the Landlord for shop-fits and refurbishments, negotiation, inspections etc - no day is ever the same!

How has the apprenticeship scheme made a difference to you?

The apprenticeship scheme has enabled me to develop skills and further my career in an area that I thought was only possible by going to university. The scheme provides invaluable ‘on the job’ practical experience and allows flexible time to complete the theoretical element of the qualification.

What support do you receive from your line manager and training provider?

My line manager ensures that I have as much time studying as I need, they are flexible on the time I need for studying and we have regular reviews to ensure that the practical experience I receive is relevant to my course. The University College of Estate Management supplied all the resources that were needed to complete my exams and I had a dedicated technical mentor that, along with my line manager, guided me to ensure that I understood the requirements of the course.

What are your future career ambitions?

My main aim is to become a Chartered Commercial Property Surveyor. I am about halfway through my development plan and have just submitted to become an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (AssocRICS), after successfully completing my Surveying Technician Diploma. If I am successfully elected as an Associate member of the RICS, it will enable me to start a Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship in Property and Real Estate later this year. If successfully completed, it will allow me to submit for my APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) to become a full member of the RICS (MRICS) and a Chartered Commercial Property Surveyor.

How does it feel to be part of the Peel L&P family?

I am proud to be part of a company that develops its people and encourages them to expand their skills both professionally and personally.
