Wirral Waters volunteers make a difference at Edward Kemp Community Garden
As part of Liverpool City Region’s Year of the Environment activities, the Wirral Waters team took part in some volunteering with the Friends of Birkenhead Park at the Edward Kemp Community Garden.
Work was carried out to help maintain the community resource by building bug/wildlife dens, composting and general maintenance work to help enhance the welcoming and inclusive space used by people with a range of health and mobility issues. Opened in 2011, the garden is also utilised by a variety of community organisations and groups who have their own plots.
Richard Mawdsley, Director of Development for Wirral Waters said: “Peel L&P volunteers were delighted to help out at the Edward Kemp gardens at Birkenhead Park. It’s an amazing green asset for Birkenhead and we hope to work with the group again and return in the future. More widely, it’s vital that those connections between Peel L&P’s Wirral Waters project, Birkenhead Park and the town centre are improved and that the park forms a fundamental component to repopulating and revitalising Birkenhead town centre”.
Jo Holden, Sustainability Manager at Peel L&P said: “It was a pleasure to work with the Friends of Birkenhead Park. We take pride in partnering with community groups across the north west to impact and help shape facilities and gardens which bring so many people together from a variety of backgrounds.”
Sheila Blair, project leader from the Friends of Birkenhead Park said: “What a difference a day makes. The Edward Kemp Community Garden is now in its 8th year and the compost area has never looked better! We have a splendid "Buglins" hotel for our resident bugs and wildlife. Thanks so much to the Peel L&P volunteers, we hope to see you again.”
Formed in 1976 by Lord (Griff) Evans of Claughton, the Friends of Birkenhead Park play a vital role in helping the park staff and liaise closely with the local authority for any matters linking to the park. Peel L&P encourages its people to volunteer in the community and each employee is given a day a year to give something back to social and environmental causes.
