Boothstown residents to benefit from new safer road crossings

Update on Boothstown pedestrian crossings work

24 March 2020

It is with regret that we have postponed our pedestrian crossing works on the A572 in Boothstown, Salford due to the uncertainty around Covid-19.

This hasn’t been an easy decision to make but I hope you can appreciate the unprecedented circumstances we’re all experiencing right now.

While initial tree works are now complete, we didn’t want to start the main crossing works in case this had to stop part way through following a change in Government advice.

We know the importance of these improvements to residents and we remain committed to delivering the new and updated crossings as soon as we are able to.

We’ll continue to monitor the Government’s advice around Coronavirus and will work with the council and our supply chain over the coming months to rearrange a suitable time for the works to take place. When this does happen, we should be in a much better position to finish the works smoothly and quickly.

We appreciate your patience and we’ll keep you updated when we know more.

Advance works to install a new signalised pedestrian crossing, and upgrade of the existing pelican crossing in Boothstown, Salford, is set to start next week to give pedestrians safer access to local facilities.

A new puffin crossing will be installed opposite the Standfield shopping centre and community facility on the A572 Simpson Road, and the existing pelican crossing on A572 Leigh Road, near the Post Office, will be upgraded to a full signalised puffin crossing.

Puffin crossings are smarter and safer options for pedestrians with sensors to detect when pedestrians are waiting, or need longer to cross the road, they also benefit motorists to reduce waiting time if no pedestrians are present.

Peel L&P, in partnership with Salford City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), has arranged for the work to take place to help improve pedestrian safety.

Preparatory work will start on Sunday 8 March with a tree removal and the pruning of another tree to make way for the crossing near the Standfield Centre. The tree work is required to ensure suitable visibility for pedestrians and drivers at this crossing point.

Construction of the crossings will begin in late March with final works expected to complete in May.

The main works will be carried out Monday to Friday during off peak hours (9:30am to 3:30pm) to help minimise disruption and Peel L&P will deliver replacement tree planting in the area following completion of the crossings.

Contractor George Cox and Sons will complete the works on behalf of Peel L&P.
